Reflection

Writing is something I don’t entirely like but don’t dislike as well. For me sometimes it can be an art form to convey emotions into stories that we could share but also it can be a pain and a hassle for not just me but many other people. During my time in high school, I was horrible at writing and understanding stories as I was a slow learner but my teachers would do their best in their abilities to help me and their students to do better and achieve better things.

My perception of writing has changed differently over this semester, when I was taught to write during high school they would tell us that we need to use these formulas to create a better working and understanding writing piece and only you need to use these formulas but now I didn’t think so. When class is done we receive work to read different pieces from different people and at a different time that has a different meaning, for example, MLK prison letter and the storied house by Tracy kidder. Two different pieces of writing but they both have a meaning behind them and the way they convey it was different and that was something that I failed to understand. In almost every reading I just read for the sake of it but I never tried to understand it. I never think of how the writer might have created their letter or story how they have structured it or even how I could take their writing as an example and use it as a guide to help further my writing skills and development as a writer.

If I go and look at my previous work I see the faults that I have made when writing it either it be grammatical errors or perhaps I oversimply the topic that I am discussing during my essay. Take a look at my narrative essay when you read it sounds personal, it sounds like it’s coming from me but when I was writing it at the beginning it didn’t sound that way. It sounded like I was giving a broad sweeping generalization of what home meant for me and this wasn’t just in my narrative essay but for almost every essay. Instead of continuing writing like that, I changed and the feedback I was given changed my way of writing to show the readers of my narrative.

I believe that I will make mistakes once I finish writing my reflection possibly you will find grammatical errors when you finish, it is common for that to find in my essays. In the future, I will have no doubts that the lessons that I was taught during this semester will help me in the future and change me as a writer, breaking me out of this cycle I put myself in where I make the same mistakes and the same introduction in every essay where I ramble on and on. I need to remember that every story that I read and every piece of writing that I have read is not just simply for enjoyment or to progress in class but as something to use when I am stuck on writing my essays and how I can improve and this is the most important thing I need to remember.

Each discussion question that I have done was to not only get feedback from our teacher and colleagues but also to improve ourselves and see the mistakes that we have made in the discussions and how to avoid them when writing. This class has been a big help as writing is more than just words put together and formulas to use, it is an excruciating process to convey a message meaning to your audience and I’m great full for going through it.
