This essay was difficult for me to write because we have to write about an object and how it is modern. Now at first, it sounded simple but I kept thinking and thinking about what I can talk about. I was overthinking it and because of that, it caused me to be uncertain about what I wanted to talk about and I keep picking objects and kept having doubts. I was in this kind of state where I was repeating a cycle that I made until I realise what I was doing I try to talk about an object that I know a lot of and live with so I can talk about my experience with it that’s when I talked about the computer. This essay wasn’t my best work that’s for sure and I know that I can do better and when I look back at my work at highschool it was better compared to this.
There are many objects people may consider as modern from a simple chair design to a complex machine or something far simple that we may use for everyday use. The definition of modernity is about the generation of its technological innovation, governance, and socioeconomic in simpler terms the state of being current or up to date with the times. The concept of modernity has been around since the 14th century, in the post-medieval era where a wide period of new concepts in different subjects came to life. Because of these new ways of thinking and shedding light on how we view the world, it’s hard to keep track of things on what we considered to be modern considering we are in the modern age. From doing research and a bit of debating with people, what is considered to be a modern object would have to be the computer.
A brief introduction to the computer was first created in 1833 by an English inventor Charles Babbaages, an automated machine capable of doing vast and complex calculations and capable of storing memory and steam-powered. It was called the Analytical machines, made up of brass, metal, and wood consisted of four components the mill, the store, the reader, and the printer. This was important as it served as the first model for the first-ever digital computer that we know of which was invented and completed in 1946 and was called ENIAC. Funded by the U.S government and inventors John Mauchly and J.Presper Eckert from the University of Pennsylvania which served to help the U.S. military, consisted of vacuum tubes, capacitors, switches, and relays it was all electrical, programmable, and much complex. The computer keeps evolving and its application keeps growing from once it was to something that wasn’t even possible to think of and it serves as a symbol to the modern era.
From my experience from using the computer, what makes it truly modern is the parts and applications that come with it helps not only me but with many people’s projects that help create our world. We can create new ideas and innovations that people were struggling with back then that were complex to complete but with the computer, we can do it with less effort, for me, it helps to keep connected with those around me and helped me in my artwork. When I do art and if there is a color that I don’t like or the shading is not to my standard I can easily change them as I please with a click of a button and waste no time instead of starting from scratch, other personal uses like shopping for clothes or using it to get food during a crisis it is convenient. Artisans, writers, architects you name it everyone has trouble with their work, those back then had pen and paper and if they had made a mistake they had to start all over but now if we make a mistake we can easily go back to our previous work and continue from there. We can easily store documentation like my papers for college or personal use such as government documentation not just for me but for everyone for different use. The components from our computers are complex and compact instead of having bulky metal electronics the size of a fridge and being powered by steam we can easily take them anywhere as we please from our pockets, wrist, and personal living and power them from our walls however this does come with consequences.
Right now we are in a world that knows no boundary we can progress much faster from how our ancestors had but some dangers come with it that we may use against each other. We can communicate with each other from across the world as we please in less than a minute instead of writing letters that would take months or years but others can use it for military application for the use of war, people may use it for malicious and knowledge gain from computers to hurt others. The computer helped and shaped the modern world we live in and it helped build globalization into what it is now, helping many nations, people, workers, scientists in trade and communication. The computer will continue to evolve to help with our needs over time and continue to be a modern object no matter what period it is as we will forever be using it for personal use.
